What is FocusRay?
FocusRay is an affordable, high-performance face-tracking device powered by Baballonia from Project Babble. Say goodbye to manual expression toggles on your controller! It’s time to share your real, authentic expressions with your friends in real-time.
FocusRay does not currently support eye tracking, but we are considering developing an eye tracking add-on module, taking into account the impact of this Kickstarter campaign.
How does it differ from official or other devices?
The primary difference lies in the camera performance. As detailed in the following sections, FocusRay is equipped with a global shutter camera capable of capturing at 120fps. This technology allows for much higher precision and higher-fidelity expression capture compared to other standard devices.

If you need face tracking right this second, you might be better off with another product. However, if you want to play with the highest quality at 120FPS and rely on the premium support and warranty that comes with FocusRay, it’s worth waiting just a little longer for your shipment.

Features
Built-in IR（Infrared）illuminators
Every FocusRay model comes equipped with built-in infrared (IR) illuminators. This means that even if you’re playing VR in complete darkness or a low-light environment, full face-tracking is still at your fingertips!

Palm-Sized and Lightweight
The FocusRay features an ultra-compact design that fits right in the palm of your hand, weighing only 38.5g. Even when mounted on your VR headset, it’s so light you’ll hardly notice it’s there!

The wired model weighs 35g, and the weight including the strap is 65g.
High-Performance Camera for High-Fidelity Expression Tracking
The FocusRay is equipped with a global shutter camera unit capable of capturing at 120fps.(OV9281) This ensures that even your most fleeting expressions are never missed. By leveraging the advantages of the global shutter system, we have achieved exceptionally high-fidelity expression tracking.
(Note: What is a Global Shutter? A global shutter is a system where all pixels on the camera's image sensor are exposed simultaneously, capturing the entire frame at once. This eliminates distortion and allows the device to capture facial movements with pinpoint accuracy.)
Total Freedom with the Wireless Model
FocusRay is available in both wired and wireless models. The wireless version features a built-in lithium-polymer (Li-Po) battery, giving you the freedom to move and groove however you like. As long as you’re within range, your expressions will follow you wherever you go!
The battery lasts for up to 3 hours on a single charge. When it’s time to power up, simply plug in a USB Type-C cable and you’re good to go.
We are not satisfied with the result of three hours of continuous operation. We will continue to make every effort to improve and extend this duration leading up to the product launch.
High-Precision Tracking at an Affordable Price with the Wired Model
While we’ll explain the differences between the models below, it’s important to note that the wired model features the exact same high-performance camera and IR illuminators as the wireless version—it simply skips the wireless module and battery.

Current Status and Progress of FocusRay
FocusRay has successfully completed the prototype development phase and is now transitioning to the final production stage.
We conduct rigorous debugging, including shipping beta test kits to carefully selected testers and reviewers and manufacturing more than 10 units of each beta kit. and are continuously conducting internal validations to further optimize the product.
The road here has been anything but short or easy. We’re excited to share these shots from our development process!

To minimize the risk of project failure or the inability to reach our funding goal due to fluctuating international shipping costs, shipping fees will be collected later through a Pledge Manager.
By handling shipping separately, we can ensure the most accurate rates and prevent unexpected cost spikes from impacting the project's viability. Please review the estimated shipping rates below for your reference before pledging.

Schedule and Timeline
Beta Kit Manufacturing and Quality Assurance
To ensure we meet the highest quality standards before mass production, we will first manufacture a small "Beta Kit" batch.
Although this involves additional cost and effort, it allows us to conduct rigorous testing and quality checks on units that are identical to the final retail version.
Furthermore, we plan to provide these Beta Kits to early reviewers to gather feedback and ensure our product exceeds your expectations.
This will be carried out continuously during the Kickstarter period.
Legal Certification and Testing（FCC＆CE）
Generally, products using wireless communication such as Wi-Fi must undergo interference and safety testing at certified laboratories in accordance with each country's laws.
While this process is time-consuming and costly, our goal is to obtain these certifications as smoothly and quickly as possible so we can deliver our product to supporters worldwide.
We have been consulting with testing laboratories since well before our Kickstarter launch and are fully prepared to begin testing immediately following the successful completion of the project.
Furthermore, we have already secured testing slots at a Japanese laboratory ahead of the Kickstarter campaign, ensuring there will be no delays due to lack of availability.
Parts Procurement and Component Ordering
Upon the successful completion of our Kickstarter campaign on May 12th, and once we receive the funds around the end of May, we will immediately begin procuring the necessary parts and ordering the PCBs and enclosures for the final production run.
We expect the procurement of essential components to take approximately two weeks, after which we will place the formal orders for all PCBs and enclosures.
Manufacturing, Packaging, and Shipping
During the final two months, we will manufacture the final products, perform assembly at our own facility, and manage all packaging and shipping.
While we have secured sufficient in-house assembly and fulfillment capacity, should orders significantly exceed our expectations, we may ship in multiple batches to ensure all units reach our supporters by their respective deadlines.
We are committed to avoiding delays, but in the event of any schedule adjustments, we will notify you immediately.
We plan to ship the maximum total of 1,100 Early Bird units by starting in August 2026, with all other standard rewards shipping sequentially starting in September 2026.
Budget Allocation
The following is a breakdown of the budget allocation for the FocusRay campaign. Each item is explained in detail below.
The target amount for this campaign is 4,000,000 JPY.（=About 26,000 USD）
To reach this target amount, we must sell at least 350 devices in total. We need support from many people!

This covers the procurement of components, PCB fabrication, and the assembly of the final product.
Research & Development (R&D) （950,000 JPY）
Our team conducts continuous R&D both before and during the campaign to ensure the highest product quality. These funds support that ongoing innovation.
This cost includes testing fees(850,000 JPY) for obtaining legal certification.

Platform Fees & Taxes
This includes Kickstarter’s platform fees(5％), payment processing fees(4.5％), and applicable taxes in various countries.

A portion of the total funds is allocated to project margins and administrative fees to ensure the project's sustainability. (Project Margin:10％、Fee:100,000 JPY)
What is the project margin used for? ：
Projects rarely go exactly as planned. We maintain a certain safety buffer to ensure we can respond flexibly to any unexpected challenges and fulfill our commitment to our backers without any disruption.

This includes promotion expenses, packaging materials, and equipment costs required for final product assembly.
