Good Seed Craft Co - Studio Build

Welcome to the Good Seed Craft Co. kickstarter! I'm so glad you're here! 

My name is Anna Rose Garrett and I am a wife, mother, artist, and educator and the founder of Good Seed Craft Co. I’ve been making things for as long as I can remember. 

In 2024, I took the plunge to start a small business around my lino prints, only six months after my first son was born. In some ways, it was a completely unideal time to start a small business. I was a new mother who probably needed to prioritize sleep and showering over making things. But the birth of my son prompted an explosion of creativity in me, and I felt compelled to channel it somewhere. I started Good Seed Craft Co. with very open hands and low expectations, sharing the prints that I had been already making at my kitchen table, between naps and after bed time.

It was and continues to be a challenging pursuit— pressing on in perseverance to hone my craft, always adjusting my expectations and pace to the needs of my family. However, the slow methodical process of linoprinting has been a tool used in my life to challenge my assumptions about success, efficiency and value. It’s become a very sacred space to me.

When I first began my business, I knew I wanted to share my artwork with others, but I also had a vague thought that it might be cool if somehow my business could encourage others to venture into creativity, foster community, and engage in a larger conversation about the value of beauty in creation. Lofty, I know. Much to my amazement, this little business has achieved some of those dreams. I have been able to take commissions in my community, create online courses, teach workshops, and speak about creativity in our modern culture. 

Much has changed in the three years since I started Good Seed. Opportunities for my business have grown, and so has our family! We now have two wonderful rowdy boys under our roof and I am grateful to be with them full time. What hasn’t grown is our space. The dining room table that has served as my “studio” for the last three years has maxed out its full potential, as I now share it with a high chair and a toddler booster seat. Which leads me to the exciting part of this kickstarter! On our property, only a few hundred feet away, sits an old 1927 shed made from hemlock lumber with lots of potential. In order to continue forward with Good Seed, we have decided to pursue converting this space into a studio. 

Why a studio?

The importance of this next step feels quite pivotal. It will allow me to have a designated workspace that doesn’t have to be set up and taken down every day, drastically maximizing my time that I delegate to working! I will have three times the room I currently have to work, including drying space! This would allow me to expand to more stores, increase the size of my work, and even try new types of printing that haven’t been realistic in our dining area. It also opens up the possibility of hosting small group workshops out of the studio, as I continue to invest locally in my community. 

What will it take?

We’ve set our goal at $5,000 which would allow us to make the space fully enclosed, electrified, and temperature controlled for paper and art supply storage. This is a very conservative estimate, but will allow us to make the space functional. Any funds raised beyond that, would go to outfit the space with lighting, hardware, paint, work benches, and drying racks. While a kickstarter is a bit out of our comfort zone, our hope is that you will be blessed by being a part of making this business blossom!

I am so excited to step into this new chapter of Good Seed in a way that supports my family and my passion for craft. The idea that I might have a space to work only a baby monitor’s distance away from my boys is a dream.

The name “Good Seed” comes from a Wendell Berry quote that has become a bit of a mantra to me. It goes like this, “The seed is in the ground. Now we may rest in hope while darkness does its work.” Berry captures the power of small things. He illuminates this idea that small acts of faithfulness done in the quiet may yield to harvest in their own time. The quiet privacy of them, may be part of the growth. I pray this business and the art I share is a good seed, however small, yielding a harvest that I may not anticipate.
