The Good Folk - Period Fantasy Short Film

We are Charmed Web, an independent production company inspired by literature, history and fantasy. 

Last summer we shot our second short film "Up or Down", a gothic fantasy film about a married couple who are placed in Purgatory together. See the trailer on our website! Excitingly it has been officially selected to screen at the London Independent Film Festival this April.

Following the fantasy narrative, and leaning more into literary influences, our short film "The Good Folk" is inspired by children's stories, illustrations and our love for the Victorian romantic literature trope. Read the outline of our story below...

Tucked away in a secluded Victorian mansion live four flower fairies Dead-Nettle, Snowdrop, Larch and Daisy. Their life is wonderful; the changing seasons roll in new opportunities for adventure and games. Their most favourite activity is playing tricks on the human-folk who tend, prune and nip at the garden. 

Set in Dorset in 1927, a young woman named Sylvie arrives at the manor a few days before she is due to be married to David, a distant cousin. In the gardens of the manor mysterious occurrences keep happening, gardeners' tools disappear and Sylvie gets knocked into the pond. Behind these events are the group of flower fairies who delight in causing chaos.

One day, the fairies refrain from a particularly cruel trick on Sylvie when
they notice she is deeply upset. They take it upon themselves to find the
cause of this distress, which happens to be that her fiancé David is having an affair with a woman who works in the house. They determine to do right for the young woman, using their skillful mischievousness to expose the affair and free her from the marriage.

Our short film follows a tradition of children's fairytales, Victorian romance, and embarks on evoking childhood imagination in the adult self. With an already established set, which you will see in the images below, we are raising funds for props, costume, and kit hire to make this film possible. This is our very minimum budget, and so we have raised our goal to £4,000 in the hopes that we can spend more on costumes and kit!

We want to work with independent and ambitious creatives to create a film full of whimsy, childhood awe and imagination. Beautiful, sunstruck, fluid visuals and a carefully crafted score will bring these characters and the story to life.
